Why Specialist Investment Is the Key to iGaming Growth

By Justin Paul Anastasi, CEO of VentureMax Group

This year’s iGB Live in London was a vibrant showcase of innovation, ambition, and disruption in the global iGaming industry.

I spent much of my time there engaged in conversations with founders, operators, and investors from across the world.

One theme stood out loud and clear: while the iGaming sector is brimming with potential, access to capital remains a significant barrier for many startups.

I was pleased to be asked to speak on a panel at the exclusive invite-only Start Up Accelerator event, as well as judging the headline Pitch competition, which VentureMax sponsored.

My key objective? To champion the vital role of specialist investment in helping iGaming businesses grow.

Being in London, the weather wasn’t the only thing that got a bit cloudy. Conversations around regulation, funding, and jurisdictional complexity revealed just how foggy things can get for startups seeking capital from mainstream lenders.

Banks still don’t know how to handle the iGaming sector. There’s a tendency to overgeneralise, to treat high-potential, compliant startups the same as riskier ventures  – and that’s shutting out innovation.

Filling Funding Gaps

iGaming doesn’t operate in a one-size-fits-all space.

Jurisdictional differences in licensing, tax obligations, marketing rules, and compliance frameworks can make life difficult for founders, and even more confusing for traditional financial institutions.

For banks and generalist investors, it’s often easier to walk away than try to understand the nuances.

As a result, many genuinely exciting businesses are left out in the cold. Not for lack of vision or capability, but for lack of acceptable optics.

It’s a funding gap that threatens to slow innovation, unless specialist investors step in.

Supplying Expertise

My vision for VentureMax is to support the hungry, ambitious businesses in the sector. My team of experts know this landscape, because we’ve travelled across it for a long time.

Our venture capital firm brings together decades of experience across iGaming, regulation, and startup investment. As a result, we’re not afraid of complexity because we’re fluent in it.

We provide tailored capital to early-stage and scaling companies across the iGaming space. But more importantly, we provide the kind of strategic partnership that goes far beyond just writing cheques.

Whether it’s opening doors to the right B2B partners or supporting your vision, we empower you to run your business to its full potential.

At iGB Live London, I had the privilege of speaking with dozens of founders building the next generation of gaming platforms, payment solutions, and compliance tools.

Interestingly, the same story emerged: strong businesses being overlooked by banks and traditional VCs due to regulatory misunderstanding. It’s like trying to get a black cab to South London at midnight. Technically possible, but good luck convincing them!

Even the availability of specialist iGaming investors is limited. Each investment firm has its own risk appetite and portfolio strategy, so it can be difficult to find the right partner.

I believe we have the right mix of disciplines, from HR to finance, and an ambitious approach that will support and transform an innovative young business.

Investing in Visionaries

iGB Live’s move to London felt symbolic: a new setting for a maturing sector. The iGB Chairman and Pitch host, Michael Caselli, likened the event to his baby, which had come of age.

And just like the city itself, iGaming is fast-moving, diverse, and full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

But for this evolution to continue, specialist capital must play a larger role in the ecosystem.

We don’t just invest in companies, we invest in conviction.

The Shrinking Grey Zone: Why Global Gambling Markets Are Polarising

Across the global gambling industry, one trend has become impossible to ignore: grey markets are disappearing.  Jurisdictions that once tolerated regulatory ambiguity are now drawing clear lines between ‘white’ markets (regulated, transparent, and compliant) and ‘black’ markets (illegal, unregulated, and high-risk).  For responsible operators, there’s no longer safety in the
